Why look for Halloween costumes else-wear?

Halloween is around the corner and what does that mean? Sales! And more importantly, dressing up to go Trick or Treating, or just for the heck of it.

We've had a year of very interesting events, ranging from an unprecedented presidential election, to a primate who got shot into fame with his last dying breath.

But why should all our costumes be inspired by international happenings when Singaporeans have had their own fair share of headlining news? Inspired by local events, here's some Singapore-inspired costumes bound to make you steal the show this Halloween.

1. Gold Rio Medal

This year we also saw a historical milestone for Singapore; where Joseph Schooling won the gold medal in the Rio Olympics in August, beating world-famous swimmer Michael Phelps by almost one full second.

To pay homage to his achievement, why not dress up as the gold medal he won during the 100m butterfly event? Go with your significant other dressed up as Joseph Schooling and make it a couple costume!

Just be warned that your partner might have to get a robe to cover themselves if it gets chilly while they're in those Speedos.

2. Zika Mosquito

Singapore also saw the spread of Zika, a tropical virus that took the world by swarm. The virus was transmitted mainly by mosquitoes with black and white stripes; similar to those spreading dengue.

The costume is also very simple to make, just dress yourself in black from head to toe and fashion yourself a pair of mozzie wings out of cardboard. For extra scariness, hold in your hand a bottle of mosquito repellent to show that not even an orange can of lemongrass scented spray will hold you down.

3. PokéStop

PokémonGO took the world by storm this year, and we saw countless accidents, triumphs and gym battles being fought and won.

While Singapore got our taste of the Poké-craze a few months late, our "Little Red Dot" turned into a "Little Blue Dot" as PokéStops, where Pokémon Trainers could charge up on supplies, started to pop up around the Island.

4. The Haze

If you'd rather go for a low-budget funny costume, how about going as haze in human form?

Girls, it's time to put that smokey-eyed power to use; drape a piece of sheer grey cloth over your head and wear an N-95 mask and a fan for added effect.

Drift from house to house as you collect treats and threaten them with a sore throat and itchy eyes if they refuse to give it to you.
